Fewer locals keeping active

A report shows that more people in Nelson and Tasman are adopting sedentary lifestyles dominated by new technology as the economic value of the sport and recreation sector in the region declines. The Lincoln University report on the economic value of sport and recreation in Tasman and

Marlborough found that the sector contributed $149.3 million or 2.5 per cent to gross domestic product (GDP) in 2012-13, down from $197.4m or 3.8 per cent of GDP in 2008-09. It also concludes that the sector’s impact is waning with fewer people exercising and Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir says

that’s a concern. “When you look at the enormous investment that goes into health and the alarming statistics on obesity, depression and diabetes, it begs the question why we don’t invest more resources at the top of the cliff,” he says. “Sport and recreation is not a solo solution but can make a huge dif-

ference to the vibrancy of our community. That’s why Sport Tasman exists to get more people more active, more often.’’ Nigel says sport and recreation is “much bigger than the economic impact, it’s about enriching lives and connecting communities.’’ He says the report is further evidence of the importance sport

and recreation plays in the economy and the everyday lives of people in the region. The report also shows the number of people taking part in sport and recreation remains high but has fallen, mirroring trends here and overseas.

Richmond man Ethan Bruce has completed the 106km Rainbow Rage not only on one wheel, but also one leg. The Richmond volunteer fire fighter completed Sunday’s Rainbow Rage on a unicycle, despite breaking his leg in two places just 30 kilometres into the race. “I went to wipe my brow and I clipped a stone which bounced me sky high, and when I came down my foot slipped and got wrenched in between the fork and the crank,” says Ethan. “I felt an almighty crack and then my wheel locked and I went fly-

ing even further, it was a double whammy.” He says he never thought of quitting despite other riders offering to use their SOS beacons so he could get a ride out. “Too many people didn’t believe that I could do it on a unicycle and I had to prove them wrong,” he says. Ethan fractured the top of his tibia, a bone in his foot and is suspected to have torn ligaments around his fibula. He was competing in the race to raise money for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, which is the charity for the annual Fire Fighters

“When I got to Jack’s Pass and read the sign that said ‘8km to Hanmer Springs’ I was so happy I almost cried, because honestly, when I got back on after the crash I didn’t think I was actually going to finish.” Ethan was the race’s only unicyclist and he crossed the Hanmer Springs Domain finish line with a time of 7hr 11min 35sec. This year’s Rainbow Rage was the event’s 21st and last. Mike says it simply wasn’t financial anymore. “After 21 years, the bottom line is the numbers of riders aren’t up there and the costs are increasing,” says Mike.

Nelson Tasman Hospice is on the move – but it needs support from the community to make it happen. The hospice, which has been at its current Manuka St site since 1999, is currently looking for a 1.4ha site, ideally in or around Stoke or Richmond. The move comes with the planned expansion of Manuka St Hospital, meaning the current site will not be big enough for both facilities. Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke says he sees the move as a “huge positive step forward,” giving them the opportunity to create something better for patients, families and staff. The new building, which needs to be up and running by early 2019, will also be able to offer more outdoor space and gardens – something that has always been on the board’s wishlist. Once a site has been identified, fund-raising will begin, and Frans says he is confident the community will get behind them to help them achieve their goal. “There is no government

Views from Richmond sought on Southern Link Kate Russell Nelsonians are being invited to make their voices heard on the Southern Link, during a five-week period of public engagement that kicks off tomorrow. The NZTA will be gathering feedback on how to improve Nelson’s arterial transport network from Wednesday March 23 through to Sunday April 24 as part of the Programme Business Case stage of the Southern Link investigation, which is the second of four stages. NZTA regional director Raewyn Bleakley says that local views and feedback are integral to finalising the Business Case. “Now is the time in the investigation where we look at all the possible ideas,” she says. “We’ve been developing some initial ideas and we also want to hear the community’s views on other options and combinations of options.” Four public information sessions will also be held in April in Nelson, Stoke, and Richmond, where people can ask investigation representatives questions and provide feedback.

NEWS MOTORBIKE DEATH: A 42-year-old Tapawera man died following a motorcycle crash on Shaggery Rd, in the Brooklyn Valley near Motueka on Monday. Joseph Goffe died at the scene after the motorcycle he was riding was in a collision with a van travelling in the opposite direction about 2.45pm. The three occupants of the van were not injured in the crash. A serious crash investigation is under way to establish the cause of the crash. BAN SUGARY DRINKS: Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chief executive Chris Fleming is encouraging school principals and chairs to accept the call to remove sugary drinks from schools. Head of the Ministry of Education Peter Hughes, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, is asking all school leaders to consider becoming a water-only school in an email sent this week. Chris says the effects sugary drinks to children’s health can be devastating, contributing to tooth decay, type-2 diabetes and heart disease. “Every year we surgically remove rotting teeth from 250 kids, under general anaesthetic, and that’s 250 children too many”, he says.

Buyer found for Suburban Club

A buyer has been found for the buildings owned by the Nelson Suburban Club, saving it from a $2.7 million debt. The buyer – understood to be a local company – has bought the buildings and land on Tahunanui Drive and will lease it back to the club for a minimum of 12 months. Executive committee members and staff at the club were informed about the deal on Monday night and club members were to be officially told at a meeting on Tuesday night. The sale is the perfect scenario for the club. It gets to continue to operate from

Film star in Nelson: Hollywood actor Michael Keaton has been enjoying the sights of Nelson – if his Instagram page is anything to go by. The actor is known for his roles in the

He has posted photos to his Instragram page of fly fishing rivers near Murchison, restaurants in Nelson and a video of people playing beach cricket at Tahunanui Beach. Michael’s page is followed by 24,000 people. River Haven Lodge also posted several photos of the actor with some recently caught trout on their Facebook page. Owner Scott Murray says Michael and his girlfriend stayed at their lodge for three nights and fished for two days. “He loves fishing in New Zealand and was a brilliant, humble, nice, friendly guest. Everything you could ask for.” He says they caught plenty of fish on the first day and some bigger ones on the second day. “He wanted to stay longer but we were only able to fit him in because of a cancellation, so we couldn’t extend his stay.”

Top chef to star at St Paul’s Gala

Simon Bloomberg One of the top contestants in last year’s Celebrity Masterchef, Richard Harris, will be showing how it’s done and serving up delicious treats at next Saturday’s St Paul’s School Harvest Gala. Richard reached the top five in TV3’s popular Celebrity Masterchef show before muddling the mascarpone in his dessert dish and being eliminated. He will be one of the star attractions at the St Paul’s gala where he will holding cooking tutorials throughout the day as well as selling his cuisine to raise money for the school. Richard won’t be the only celebrity showing his wares at the gala, with Prime Minister John Key donating a sketch of the Beehive for the silent auction. Interestingly, the flag the Prime Minister has drawn on top of the Beehive is the existing one with the Union Jack and Southern Cross. The silent auction has a number of other big ticket items including a luxury weekend away in Wellington including passes to Weta workshop. There is also a family holiday at Peppers Awaroa Lodge while another popular item, an All Black rugby jersey signed by the 2013 team, will be sold on TradeMe. Acting principal, Philippa Hood says she’s delighted with the support the school has received for the gala which is back by popular demand after last being held five years ago. “The entire school, parents and local community are coming together and putting in a huge effort to ensure this harvest gala will be a great event and one to remember,” Philippa says. Next Saturday’s gala will also feature the usual traditional activities such as the chocolate wheel, books, toys, second-hand clothing, white elephant stalls and food stalls. There will be rides, games and entertainment for all ages, a haunted house and bouncy castles. Entertainment will be provided by dance groups and Keiran O’Connor, who was a member of the Rockquest Nelson winning band Oh Blok. All proceeds raised from the gala will be going towards the school’s new multi-function centre. The gala will be held at the school grounds on Salisbury Rd next Saturday, April 2, from 11am to 2pm.

Warmer homes scheme expands its reach Simon Bloomberg The Warmer Healthier Homes programme is teaming up with two new partners so it can help keep even more people in Nelson and Tasman warmer and healthier this winter. Warmer Healthier Homes was initiated by the Rata Foundation in 2014 with the aim of insulating the homes of low income families for free to help improve their health. The majority of families were referred to the scheme by health professionals but this month two new organisations, Age Concern and Sexual Abuse Support and Healing (SASH), have come on board. Warmer Healthier Homes Nelson Tasman committee chair Bill Dahlberg says health professionals have played a big part in the success of the scheme and now Warmer Healthier Homes has widened its reach by partnering community groups like Age Concern and SASH. Bill says Age Concern

is a perfect partner for the scheme because they work with older residents who are often living in cold, uninsulated houses. “We have worked a little bit with groups in the community before but now we want to formalise it by signing a memorandum of understanding with them,” Bill says. “We thought Age Concern would be a perfect partner because they are already helping the older people we want to target. “We want to partner with other community groups in the future but we are only starting with two so we can manage it properly. If it goes well, other community groups will be added later.” Age Concern manager Sue Tilby says they deal with health, neglect and abuse issues on a daily basis and the incidence of those problems is increasing as “more and more older people stay in their homes longer”. She says teaming-up with Warmer Healthier Homes will help them resolve the winter-related health issues of a number of their clients. “We had one lady, last year, who phoned up and said her home was so cold in winter she couldn’t get out of bed, so we visited her and found out she had a serious breathing problem because of the cold. We actually referred her on to Warmer Healthier Homes and I can think of three of our clients right now who we could refer.” Bill says the Rata Foundation has just approved another $100,000 for the scheme which is delivered through Nelson-based insulation specialists Absolute Energy. Absolute Energy’s Paul Brockie says the scheme is great value with an average cost of just $2800 to insulate each home, providing significant and immediate health benefits. “We are getting good results and they are

instant and that’s what drives us,” he says. However, Bill says they need to secure further long-term funding partners to achieve their strategic goal that Warmer Healthier Homes becomes a sustainable project. “We’ve done over 250 homes in Nelson and Tasman and that’s 1000 warm people, which is the bottom line. But I estimate that there are around 2000 homes in the region that are badly in need of insulation so we still have a long way to go.”

Sundial Square was lit up with colour on Saturday as artists of all ages and stages spread colour across the well-walked pavement. Armed with buckets of chalk, around 250 people got down on their hands and knees and created masterpieces, themed on ‘inspiration’. One of the stand outs was ‘Love Yourself ’ by Waimea College student Bradley Page, who says he was inspired by people. “I decided to make the person the

inspiration because there’s not really anything that is much more inspiring than everyone,” says Bradley. The chalk art event was part of the 2016 Inspire Festival, a Ministry of Inspiration initiative to inspire youth and get them actively participating in art, science, technology, engineering, maths and society. “These kind of events are awesome, I really love art but there hasn’t been anything like this lately so it’s great that people can just come out and do art,” says Bradley.

Young patient donates painting to hospital The walls in the Nelson Hospital paediatrics ward are a little more interesting now thanks to a "fabulous" gift from one of the ward's former patients. Imogen Vlugter, 11, was a patient in Nelson Hospital late last year when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease. Last week, she returned to the hospital to donate a framed print by Nelson artist Anna Aceves to be hung on the art-wall in the paediatrics ward. Imogen won the signed print in a colouring-in competition and says she wanted to

donate it to the paediatrics ward so other children and their parents could enjoy it as well. "I like painting nature and animals and plants, so when I was in hospital I wanted to look at all the art on the walls," Imogen says. "Then I won Anna's painting and wanted to share that with all the children who go into hospital." Imogen's mother Julie says they are both keen artists and spent a lot of time together "exploring and looking at all the paintings on the walls" when they were in Nelson

It’s been decades since they patrolled the waves and religiously listened to surf reports, but Nelson’s original beach bums are once again returning to the sand and surf. With stories of big waves, hot girls, road trips and rescues, the Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club and the Nelson Board Riders Club will descend on Tahunanui for a reunion next month. These ocean mavericks were the first in Nelson to make surfboards, hang ten, get piped and don the iconic surf lifesaving uniform, and they say the region was even more of a beach mecca back in the 1960s. "The beach used to be busier than Surfers Paradise, there was hardly a spot to lie down," says Roger Gibbons. Member of the Board Riders Club, Geoff Combs, says the surf club was the centre of activity in Tahuna. “We used to host the Beachcombers’ Ball, New Year’s Day beach races, carnivals and King Neptune Day.” King Neptune Day was an

The King would judge sandcastles, tiny tots, and the Mr and Miss Tahunanui competition. Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club: The Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1958 to keep the beach safe for swimmers and give beach-loving locals a chance to challenge themselves. The club was a big part of the

beach scene at Tahuna until it closed down in 1981. Pete Chapman says there were some big rescues and sad drownings. “I was there when the local chemist’s son drowned off the spit. He was with a school group down the Back Beach, they’d gone along the spit and got into trouble and he drowned, but I was only in primary school then.” While the club was a popular place, there was no room for female members. “We all had girlfriends,” says Pete. “But it was the 60s, there were no

Nelson Board Riders Club: The Nelson Board Riders was formed in the early 1960s by the surfing side of the Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club. Former member Henk Beek remembers the birth of surf in Nelson and was right amongst the sunscreen and speedos. “It was the early 60s when we started hearing about this board riding thing and this guy in Hawaii. We saw they were wooden boards and we had two or three builders in the club, Dunbar, John Ford and Sharpells, so we all got together and started making our own boards.” Henk says their boards were “massive”, around 2.5 metres long and 8cm thick. “They looked like ironing

Relay money already going to good use

Kate Russell Money raised from this month's Relay for Life is to go towards helping Nelson cancer patients undergo physiotherapy. A cheque for $1500 was presented to Helen Nott of Activate Physiotherapy on Friday morning, who provides specialised cancer rehabilitation programmes for all ages, and all types of cancers. Linda Lucre from the Cancer Society, who presented the cheque, says the idea is to “give back to the community” after Relay for Life. “We don’t want patients to not be able to afford it and Helen does such a fantastic job,” she says. Activate Physiotherapy are the only local certified providers of PINC and STEEL cancer physiotherapy rehabilitation programmes, which help improve the strength, quality of life and sense of well-being of men and women diagnosed with cancer.

Giants’ 96 year old super fan gets gift from hero

During her 20 year support for the Nelson Giants, one thing has remained constant for 96 year old Doris Cuthbert – a kiss from her favourite player, Phill Jones. Doris has attended every home game for the Mike Pero Nelson Giants since the early 1990s, a time-frame that has matched Phill Jones’ remarkable 23 year career with the team. She says, after every game she gets a kiss on the cheek from some of the players, including her favourite, Phill. “The players go past me when they come on and go off and I never miss out getting a kiss from Phill,” says Doris. “It’s quite nice.” This season management at the Giants have decided to gift Doris and her daughter, Kathy Cuthbert, season passes after years of buying them. But it isn’t the first time she’s been surprised by the team she loves, two years ago they made her a 95th birthday cake. Doris says she started playing basketball when she was around ten but only started supporting

At the same time Doris was morphing into a Giants superfan, a young Phill Jones was establishing himself as a star player. He says Doris has been a part of his life as a Giant. “We’re lucky that, over the course of my career, we have had a loyal fan-base and there are hundreds who has been coming for years. But she is one who has

been at every game,” he says. “I do recall big games that we had in Nelson and her sitting on the baseline and pointing the finger at the odd player, she’s pretty protective of our players.” Doris is such a huge fan that she even attended games last year in a brace after she broke her neck. When the Giants return to the newly-renovated Trafalgar Centre on April 2, Doris will be there. And you can bet she won’t be leaving until she gets a kiss from her hero Phill.

Brightwater School is engaging students in the science curriculum as a major focus for the 2016

This term teachers and students have been investigating the ‘Material World’ looking at the ‘Properties and Changes of Matter’ which has involved dissolving solids, liquids and gases, and chemical reactions. Term 2 will focus on Planet Earth and Beyond, and in term 3 the Physical World, while in term 4 the focus is on the Living World. Postage costs increase From the first of July, kiwis will pay extra to post the standard 80 cent letter. New Zealand Post announced last week that sending a medium sized letter by Standard Post will soon cost $1, a 20 cent increase. The cost of sending the same letter by FastPost will increase 40 cents to $1.80. The changes come on the back of New Zealand Post’s annual price review. A statement released by New Zealand Post last week says, “Letter vol-

umes have continued to fall sharply at a rate of approximately 60 million items a year. “This has impacted revenue and despite significant and ongoing cost reductions some price adjustments are necessary.” While an increase will effect some international and business products including BoxLink, FreePost and Bulk Mail, New Zealand Post say domestic parcel prices will remain unchanged in 2016. South Island Zephyrs set for Nelson Andrew Board If you’re driving around Nelson this Easter Weekend and feel like you’re stuck in a 1960s time-warp, don’t worry you haven’t mastered timetravel – a South Island Zephyr show is in town. The Southern Connection 2016, is being hosted by the Blenheim Garden City Zephyr Car Club in Nelson. The event will be hosted at the Tahuna Beach Conference Centre

and will see around 60 Ford Zephyr’s on show, including about a dozen local cars. The event is for South Island Zephyr clubs to meet and show off their pride and joys. Ford Zephyr’s were popular British-made cars in New Zealand during the 1950s and 1960s. The event starts on Saturday with a Show and Shine on the grass area at the Speight’s Ale House. Public viewing will be from

9.30am until 1.30pm. On Sunday the cars will go on a cruise of the region, starting at the Speight’s Ale House at 9.30am. They will then head to Motueka via the Moutere Hills. Craig Ingham and Chris Trathen have been workmates and business partners for 15 years and now their sons Tom Ingham and Nick Trathen are team-mates after being named in this year’s Mike Pero Nelson Giants. Tom, 23, joined the side this season after playing for the Otago Nuggets while studying at Otago University while Nick, 19, made the jump to the Giants after showing potential as a development player last year. Proud dads Craig and Chris say they are thrilled their sons have achieved their dream of playing for the Giants although Craig thought that Tom was always going to be a cricketer. A former Central Districts opening batsman, Craig coached Tom in the Waimea College First XI and Nelson age group teams and he showed enough promise to suggest he would follow in his father’s footsteps. Craig also concedes that he thought Tom may not be tall enough to make the grade as a basketballer until he started to shoot up and hit 1.9m

in his last few years at school. “I don’t know where he got his height from. When I was playing cricket we were known as the Nelson Gnomes, so that gives you an idea of how tall I am. “But I guess Tom’s got a few tall uncles and he’s got their genes. He was a handy cricketer but he found his passion in basketball and it took over. “He’d been picked up as a recruitment player for the Giants at a young age so he had a lot on and something had to give and it was cricket. I think it’s nice that it’s his own thing.” In contrast, Nick, who is 2m tall, was always going to have the physical attributes to be a top basketballer with Chris standing at 1.934m. “Nick’s got my height but I didn’t play basketball so he didn’t get anything else from me. It was all rugby for me but I reckon I would have been a bloody good basketballer,” Chris jokes. However, Tom and Nick both say that their physical attributes wouldn’t have counted for anything without “amazing” coaches, like the late Greg Wright and for-

And that’s the main reason why the two young Giants are stepping up and taking over the college’s basketball programme from their predecessors. “There hasn’t been anyone permanent running the basketball at Waimea since Greg’s passing,” Tom says. “There have been some parents who have stepped up and done

a great job but we wanted to get something a bit more structured. “I talked to Nick about it and he was really keen being an Waimea College old boy. We both wanted to try and start something special at the college for the boys. Tom says the coaching is “going really well so far with 25-30 kids coming in the mornings. It’s really exciting to see that there are kids who want to get better for a start and it’ll progress from there”.

Wanderers get title defence off to perfect start

Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers got their title-defence off the perfect start when the Car Company division one club rugby season kicked off on Saturday, beating Kahurangi 33-22 at Trafalgar Park. Number 8 Angus Gibbons was the hero for Wanderers, scoring a hattrick of tries, while midfielder

Sione Hoani and winger Sean King also dotted down. Coach Todd Bavin says his side got better as the game went on. “We were a bit rusty in the first half to be fair. But in the second half it came together.” He says Marist could prove a sterner test after pulling off a big opening win over Waimea Old Boys, 29-7. “They will have good continuity because they have a similar squad to last year so they should be very

competitive.” While defending their title is the goal, Todd says it’s not the day-today focus. “We don’t want to look too far ahead, it might sound a bit cliché but we want to win our Tuesday night training, win our Thursday night training and that gives us a good chance to win on Saturday,” he says. Meanwhile, Waimea Old Boys will be looking to put the first game behind them as they get set to travel to play Nelson at Trafalgar Park under lights, also on

Veteran swimmers still up to speed Simon Bloomberg

Most athletes start to lose their mojo as they get older and dickie knees and other injuries and just plain old age start to impact on speed, strength, flexibility and recovery times But there’s one group of athletes in Nelson who are getting better as they get older, or at least are getting slower at a much slower rates, and they have been putting out the numbers to prove it. In fact, the men in the 5059 age group, and a few in the 60-69, in this summer’s Port Nelson Sea Swims have been showing up many of the younger competitors. The top 50-59 swimmers, Hamish Neill, Denis Cooper and Chris Vincent, and fastest 60-69 swimmer, Ben van Dyke, were regular top 15 finishers during the popular 14-race series. In one swim on March 3, eight of the male 50-59 swimmers were in the top 20 compared to just two 30-39 swimmers and no 20-29 swimmers. Some of the older females are pretty fast as well with top 40-49 swimmer Kerry Mathieson and fastest 50-59 swimmer Christina Harris also top 15 regulars. “It’s an age and stage thing,” race director Dick Bennison, who is also one of the fastest 60-69 age groupers, says. “It’s been like that for

the last six or seven years with those 40-49 and 50-59 age groups. “There are a number of reasons for it and, I think, one of them is that there are a lot of broken-down runners in that age group and they are transitioning into swimming because it’s another competitive sport that is low impact. “It’s also the the largest age group by far with 46 swimmers so they have weight in numbers. The next biggest group is the 40-50 men with 34 swimmers.” Another factor, according to Ben is that the older swimmers have more time to train than the 20-49 age group who, he says, are too busy working, paying off mortgages sand looking after young families. “I was a competitive swimmer when I was young but stopped in my mid-twenties because I was so busy. Then you get to 40 or 50 and you start to realise you are not fit and you want to get it all back.” Hamish agrees with Ben, adding that swimming is one of the few sports where older competitors can hold their speed because it is “so dependent on technique”. Denis and Ben say they are also lucky in Nelson because there is a dedicated group of veteran swimmers who regularly train together in the pool and sea.

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. “There’s a group of us who have been swimming in the sea four or five times a week since Christmas,” Ben says. “We usually swim about three kilometres so it’s a good endurance workout and it’s enjoyable the sun comes up and you get glassy water, it’s just beautiful.” Although the veterans can’t keep up with the young speedsters like series winners Thomas Heaton and Talya Harwood, Denis says they still enjoy the rivalry among their own age group and are always striv-

No one got close to Chris Brake’s jumping records at the Tapawera Area School athletics champs held last week but then again no one really expected any of the champion high, triple and long jumper’s records to be broken. Chris has been the best track and field athlete to come out of Tapawera Area School, winning national titles in all three jumping disciplines.

Chris has continued to make giant strides in his athletics career since accepting a scholarship at Anchorage Alaska University, breaking the university’s triple jump record this season with a leap of 14.3 metres. The top performances at Tapawera Area School’s champs last week included Christal McKenzie’s fast time in the 200 metres. Tadmor House led the way in the inter-house battle, setting a new school record in the boy’s 4x100 metre relay.

TASMAN COMBINED - Fiji Rugby Trip A squad of young rugby players from around the Nelson-Tasman region will be heading to Fiji later this year to play two games and also help out a village near Lautoka that was devastated by Cyclone Winston. Twenty-one players, aged 13 to 14, have been named in the squad by coach Ian Biggs who has been coaching many of the boys in age-group representative teams for the last three years. The squad will travel to Fiji on June 28 to play two games against teams organised by the Yama-

cia Club which Ian says will be a great experience for the boys. However, the games are not the only focus of the tour with all the players taking extra playing gear which they will donate to the Fijian boys. The players will also be taking stationary to donate to the local schools “Each player will have a full bag of 23kg so we’ll fill them all up with extra playing gear and stationary and donate everything to the local community,” Ian says. Ian says that will be a great way to help the community get
